Mr El-Khawly was born in Bterram in 1876. He studied in the American College and obtained his baccalaureate in July 14, 1897. He taught in the Anglican College for 7 years.
He continued his studies in the US where he won his title as Professor of Sciences in Colombia University in 1905.
He returned to Lebanon and held a position as Professor of Education and Assistant Professor of Arabic in Beirut College in 1909. He taught in the college during 43 years and became Vice Dean in the Department of Literatures and Sciences.
He authored and co-authored several books and numerous articles dealing with issues of sciences, society and literature.

He was married to Nassima Yowakim El-Rassi and had a family of one daughter: Soumaya and 4 sons: Rajaa, Bahjat, Kamal and Fadlallah.
